Holy freak what is this phenomenon that everyone is talking about?!
No matter where you go all you hear is Psy and his latest hit "Gangnam style"! And I mean it! Be it in the news or tv-shows all around the world - practically EVERYONE seems to know Gangnam Style. Even in London´s underground I could hear the beat of his catchy music coming out of the speaker. And the phenomenon is spreading like a resistant virus. Currently no one was able to develop an antibiotic to cure this trend....
But who is this guy who became famous over night? And what the heck is that song actually about? Well, first of all let me talk about him. Yes him - the man dressed in super colorful attire but at the same time fashionable suits and classic sunglasses! His name in fact is Park Jae Sang but better known by his stage name Psy. He is a Korean artist signed under YG Entertainment, one of Korea's biggest talent agencies located in Seoul. Being 13 years in the music industry and famous for his individual style in music he already won the heart of many Koreans. But with the horse-riding dance song he managed his international breakthrough and became the first Korean artist to rank #1 in the US. I also think that his sense of humor has further driven his popularity.
Right now his song is number 1 hit on various music charts all over the world including USA, New Zealand and Belgium. He even set a new world record for the most viewed video on Youtube by receiving more than 300.000.000 clicks within two month. I have to admit that this is indeed a phenomenally achievement.
In the music video Psy performs an hilarious invisible horse riding-dance in different locations around Gangnam district. This dance was even praised by world stars like Katy Perry or Britney Spears.
Gangnam Style is all about the superficial lifestyle of rich people at Gangnam district. A place which is renowned for its similarity to Beverly Hills. I´ve got really surprised after reading the translation of the lyrics. Psy sings that he is a great guy whose ideas are bigger than his muscles. To the contrary the singer is trying to parody himself for being far away from the so called Gangnam Style in the music video. And as an example he lounges at a sauna with two gangsters instead of working out in a high-end fitness club what you can clearly see while watching the video. Gangnam Style is in fact an ironic song in which Psy criticizes the lifestyle in Gangnam District. That means rich people are only good-looking because they have money to get plastic surgery or are able to buy luxury goods.
So if you guys look for Psy´s song on Youtube you will also find a lot of parodies in different languages. Because of the Gangnam Style spoof 14 lifeguards in El Monte even lost their job! Can you believe that?!
All in all I enjoy the beat of this song and the comical acts of Psy in his video. Sometimes if I feel down I use to listen to this song in order to get cheerful again. Since there a lot of parodies you won´t get bored at all. Besides a number of dance studios have started to offer special classes on the Gangsam Style dance!
